जाति – भेद भारत के सामाजिक जीवन की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण विशेषता है । जिस प्रकार की जाति – बिरादरियां भारत में हैं वैसी किसी अन्य देश में नहीं है ।जाति – भेद के विकास के अनेक कारण हैं । किसी एक हेतु से सब जाति – बिरादरियों की उत्पति की व्याख्या नहीं की जा सकती ।
अग्रवाल जाति का उद्भव आग्रेय – गणसे हुआ है ।जिसका सबसे प्राचीन उल्लेख महाभारत में मिलता है । अग्रवाल लोग यह मानते हैं कि उनका आदि निवास स्थान अगरोहा में था और वहां से वे अन्यत्र जाकर बसे । उनकी यह मान्यता वास्तविकता पर आधारित है ।
अग्रवाल जन्मत: वैश्य नहीं थे नहीं थे , अग्रोहा – विध्वंश के बाद उन्हें अन्य जगहों में जाकरबसना पड़ा और आजीविका निर्वाह के लिए उन्हें क्षत्रिय होते हुए भी खेती एवं वाणिज्य का वैश्य कर्म करना पड़ा ।
सम्भव है इसी समय से अग्रवाल वैश्य कहलाने लगे ।
अग्रवाल जाति के नामकरण पर भी दो कारणों पर ध्यान जाता है ।प्रथम अग्रसेन के वंशज अर्थात अग्रसेन के बालक होने के कारण हम सब आज अपने को अग्रवाल कहते हैं । द्वितीय अगरोहा के मूल निवासी जब अन्यत्र बाहर जाकर बसे तो वे अग्रोहा वाले , अगरोहावाले कहलाने लगे और बाद में धीरे – धीरे समय बीतने पर वही अग्रोहा वाले अगरवाले (अग्रवाल ,अगरवाल ) कहलाने लगे ।पर प्रथम कारण पर हीं विश्वास अधिक
होता है कि अग्रसेन के वंशज होने के कारण हम सब अग्रवाल कहलाए ।अग्रसेन के नाम से हीं यद्यपि अग्रवाल वंश चला है और अग्रसेन हीं इसके मूल पुरूष हैं तथापि अग्रसेन की जो संतति हुई उसकी उत्पति यज्ञ से है और यज्ञों से उत्पन्न पुत्रों के गोत्र भी उन ऋषियों के नाम से है जिन्होंने ये यज्ञ कराए थे ।
अगरोहा के विध्वंश के पश्चात इतिहास लेखकों ने इतना हीं लिखा कि अग्रवाल वहां से भागकर युक्त – प्रांत , पंजाब , कोल , नारनौल ,
झुन्झनु , दिल्ली , मारवाड़ आदि स्थानों में जा बसे और वैश्य वृति से अपना जीवन निर्वाह करने लगे । इसके पश्चात क्या हुआ ? इस पर कुछ काल खण्ड के लिए इतिहास मौन है पर मुगलों के शासन काल में फिर अग्रवाल वंशियों की बढ़त दिखाई पड़ी । प्रथम मुगल बादशाह बाबर के बेटे हुमायुं के पश्चात कुछ समय के लिए दिल्ली के तख्त पर हेम चन्द्रनाम का कोई बादशाह बैठा था । ऐसा कहते हैं कि वह अग्रवाल था ।इसके पश्चात बादशाह अकबर ने अग्रवाल वंशिय मधु शाह को अपना वजीर बनाया था । मधु शाही पैसा इन्हीं मधु शाह के नाम पर चला था जो अब भी देखने में आता है ।
इसके पश्चात मुसलमान साम्राज्य के सूर्यास्त के समय तक अग्रवाल जाति के किसी पुरूष का नाम इतिहास में विशेष प्रसिद्ध हुआ दिखाई नहीं पड़ता । बंगाल के इतिहास में मुसलमानों के राज्य अन्त के समय मेंजगत सेठ का नाम विशेष प्रसिद्ध हुआ । ये जगत सेठ अग्रवाल थे और बंगाल के नवाब के दरबार में इनकी बड़ी प्रतिष्ठा थी । इन्हीं के खानदान में आधुनिक हिन्दी के आचार्य , प्रतिभाशाली लेखक और कवि भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र हुए ।
शनै: शनै: अग्रवाल आगे बढ़ते रहे और अग्रोहा विध्वंश के आठ शताब्दी के बाद आज वर्तमान में
अग्रवाल एक वट – वृक्ष का रूप धारण कर चुका है । आज अग्रवाल देश के कोने कोने में हीं नहीं बल्कि देश के बाहर विदेशों में भी पैठ बना चुके हैं और महाराजा अग्रसेन की कीर्ति पताका फहरा रहे हैं ।
सम्भव है कुछ खामियां भी अग्रवालों में आई है जिसका उनृमुलन करते हम सभी को आगे बढ़ना है ।
अग्र योद्धा तुम अग्र वीर अग्रसेन के सुत प्रवीर कुछ करके तुम्हें दिखाना है आगे हीं बढ़ते जाना है। ।।
और अन्त में अग्रवाल भाईयों से इसी निवेदन के साथ कि ——
अग्रवंश अवतंस बनो हर जुल्मों पर विध्वंश बनो । क्षण एक नहीं आराम करो विघ्नों में रहकर नाम करो ।।
कहीं कोई दुखी: ,कोई दीन न हो कोई कातर कोई बलहीन न हो । हर चेहरे पर मुस्कान रहे सुख से भावी सन्तान रहे। ।।
